The "sun being turned to darkness" can occur when it accumulates dust, which travels with the galactic current sheet, and is now on the increase in our solar system That accumulation is followed by an energy release burst, a "solar micronova". Sometimes other bad things like floods and earthquakes happen, notably if the planetary rotational axis shifts for some period of time, instead of just the magnetic axis, which is already happening, as our planetary magnetic fields rapidly weaken (NASA won't produce numbers since 2010, nor will the Europeans or Chinese.)
